About Roots To Sky Forest School

What to Expect at Roots To Sky

Roots To Sky Forest School is a nature-based learning program for home-learning families in the Nelson area. Children gather two days each week outdoors, primarily at Taghum Regional Park, to learn through play, exploration, and shared experiences in nature.
Our days unfold outside in all kinds of weather, guided by curiosity and a gentle rhythm rather than a strict schedule. Children have time and space to explore, create, move, and connect with one another.
The program is designed to complement home learning while offering children a supportive community and meaningful time outdoors.

“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.”

Albert Einstein

A Day at Roots To Sky

Each day begins with children arriving and settling into the forest. Backpacks are dropped, boots find their way onto trails, and the group gradually gathers.

We usually begin with a simple circle or group gathering. This might include a story, a check-in, or a moment to notice what the day in nature is offering.

From there, the day unfolds through free play and exploration. Children build forts, climb, investigate plants and insects, follow trails, or create their own imaginative worlds in the forest.

Guided activities are offered throughout the day. These might include nature crafts, tool use, fire building, cooking over the fire, seasonal projects, or nature study connected to what we observe around us.

Snack and meal times become moments of connection. Children gather, talk, laugh, and rest before heading back into play and exploration.

Toward the end of the day, we gather again for reflection and closing. Children share stories from the day, celebrate discoveries, and transition gently back toward home.

There is structure, but no rushing. Children move at their own pace, and the weather becomes part of the learning experience rather than something to avoid.

Curiosity Leads Learning

Children follow their natural curiosity through hands-on exploration. Questions, discoveries, and small adventures in the forest often become the starting point for deeper learning.

Learning By Doing

Children build, create, observe, and experiment throughout the day. Real experiences like building shelters, cooking over a fire, and studying plants help learning come alive.

Growing Confidence

Outdoor challenges help children develop confidence and resilience. Climbing, problem-solving, and working together encourage independence and self-trust.

Community and Connection

Mixed-age groups allow children to learn from one another. Younger children gain confidence while older ones grow into leadership and cooperation.

A Place Where Children Grow Through Nature

Is This Something For My Child?

Who Thrives Here

Children who thrive in this program are often those who love being outdoors, learn best through doing rather than sitting, and are naturally curious or self-directed. Many children benefit from the smaller group setting and the freedom to move, explore, and engage with the environment around them.
Families who often feel aligned with the program are those who value nature-based learning, are home-learning families, and appreciate child-led or inquiry-based education. Many parents who join the program are actively involved in their child’s learning and appreciate a community that supports inclusivity and connection.

The program may not be the best fit for families who are looking for a highly structured academic program or full-time classroom instruction. It may also feel challenging for families who prefer teacher-directed learning or who are uncomfortable with outdoor conditions and changing weather.
Being clear about this helps ensure that families who join Roots To Sky feel truly aligned with the rhythm and values of the program.

Yes, the day follows a gentle rhythm that provides both structure and flexibility.
Children gather together at the beginning and end of the day, share meals and snacks, and participate in group activities throughout the day. Between these moments, there is plenty of space for free play, exploration, and child-led discovery.
This balance helps children feel safe while still allowing them to follow their curiosity.

Learning happens constantly in the forest.

Children develop practical skills, problem-solving abilities, cooperation, and confidence through hands-on experiences. Activities like building shelters, observing plants and animals, storytelling, crafting, and group projects naturally connect to many areas of learning.

Rather than separating learning into subjects, children experience it as part of everyday life.

Roots To Sky uses mixed-age groups, which creates a supportive environment where children can learn from one another.

Younger children gain confidence by observing older peers, while older children often grow into leadership roles. Facilitators help guide communication, encourage cooperation, and support children in working through challenges together.

This helps children build strong social skills and meaningful friendships.

Roots To Sky is designed to complement home learning rather than replace it.

The program offers two days per week of outdoor learning, community connection, and hands-on experiences in nature. Many families find that this balance supports both academic learning at home and meaningful time outdoors.

Roots To Sky runs in most weather conditions throughout the year. Rain, snow, and changing seasons are part of the learning experience.

Children come prepared with proper outdoor clothing so they can stay comfortable and enjoy their time outside. When children are dressed for the weather, they often find that rainy or snowy days become some of the most memorable ones.

Facilitators always monitor weather conditions carefully and adjust activities as needed to keep children safe and comfortable.
